It seems thai scroll sawyers arc a pretty dedicated bunch. If there's an event thai even mentions scrolling you can count on seeing one of the nicest groups of woodworkers you could find under one roof almost any place in Ibe country. It also seems that distance isn't a factor as evidenced by Joe Diveley's picnic. A lot of the folks here were also at Dale Whisler's picnic in Stephens, Pennsylvania and at the Ultimate Woodcrafting Festival in New Jersey. Perhaps there should be some sort of prize not jusl for Ihose who travel the furthest but also for those who have accumulated the most miles attending these events.

Joe Diveley did a fine job of rounding up a great group of vendors as well as providing the Scroll Saw Alliance of the World (S.A.W.) with another opportunity to conduct a contest for the best entries in the beginner, intermediate and advanced scrolling categories. Joan West, president of S.A.W. along with a number of members gave the judges a challenge in assigning firsts, seconds, and thirds for the work that was

entered in their contest.

The S.A.W. contest wasn't the only repository of excellent craftsmanship. The work on display by attendees was also incredible. The high standards to which scrollers are elevating themselves is definatcly feeding the furnace of creativity, and these pictures cannot do proper justice Lo the talents that were on display (it would take an entire book to even scratch the surface).

This is only a small sampling of what was at this wonderful event. If you get a chance next year, you should make plans on attending the Midwest Scroll Saw Picnic. You will not be disappointed, and be sure lo bring along something you have made and show it off.

Next year's picnic will be on Saturday August 5th, 2000. We look forward to seeing you there!

These fellows are the first place winners of the S.A.W. contest. Left to right: Grover Irish, 1st place advanced category; Bill Guimond, 1st place original design category; Mike Irish 1st place intermediate category; and Ben Shack, 1st place Beginner category. Of course after this, Ben is no longer a beginner—not to worry, he should have no problem measuring up to the advanced classification next year.

Here's Pat Spielman at his booth, in my estimation, Pat is responsible for the growth of scroll sawing as we know it today. His books and publications continue to inspire our community and he has started many a person on the road to a small business.
