instructions A note on material selection

Choose your materia! from any of the beautiful hardwoods, or select Baltic birch plywood. While contrasting hardwoods create a very striking project, please keep in mind that they are more expensive and time consuming to work with. Baltic birch, on the other hand, comes in a variety of thicknesses, requires minimal sanding, and is much more economical to work with.

Cut, finish, and assemble

- Cut your pieces to size according to the Bill of Materials. Sand as needed, then use the spray adhesive to adhere the paper patterns to the work pieces. Bore starter holes where needed and begin cutting the design following the solid lines. Remove the pattern paper and sand off any glue residue if needed. Oil or stain the pieces with the finish of your choice.

If using hardwoods for this project, we recommend using a dishpan type container to dip the pieces in a penetrating oil such as Watco Danish oil or tung oil. Follow the manufacturer's instructions for drying time and procedures. If using Baltic birch plywood, we recommend using two or more colors of wood stain. This will create more contrast between the pieces for a more striking effect. When all pieces are thoroughly dry, use wood glue or silicone to secure each piece in place. If you prefer a glossy finish, spray with one to three coats of a clear lacquer. Attach the sawtooth hanger to the back of the shield and your plaque is ready to display.(1
