The easiest is lo have a large router table set up with stop blocks, or use a hcnd router wilh ori extended base. I made this one from a scrap piece of 3/8"-thick I cyan™. The red oak is 1" thick, the cat pattern will be 1 /8" thick, and the backer will be around 1/8" thick, so I routed the recess 3/8" deep. This will Iccvc a 3/8" Ihickness for "carving." Anything thicker and the vegetation will appear too heavy. Use any good puality No. 0 scroll saw blade to cut out the waste areas. Once it is routed out, clean up any irregulcr edges and corners with c sharp chisel. Mark the vegetation pattern to determine the vertical dis-lance in Ihe design. Transfer those mcrks to the edge of the oak board and cxlerd them around to the back. (You may prefer to use a ballpoint pen or black marker instead of a pencil, as the lines will be more easily seen.) Establish the side boundcries by measuring from the outermost points on the edges of Ihe pc 51 tern ard mark the back ot the board. This will enable you to center the pattern. We ended up with an arec for the recess that measured 9-3/8" x 12-3/4". Mount the vegetation pattern to ihe board using lempo-rary-bond adhesive. If you hove made your measurement properly, the pattern should drop right info place. Make sure the pattern is bonded to the wood. Drill the holes using a No. 58 drill bit. Start the project by sanding off all the mill marks. |
