Here's a method that eliminates guesswork when aligning the rip fence to the miter gauge slot. Loosen the retaining bolts on the rip fence, then butt the fence against a long steel rule (or carpenter's square) in the miter gauge. Make sure there's good contact between the fence, rule, and miter gauge. Tighten the retaining bolts and the fence will be parallel,

The use of stee! wool to smooth wood finishes can leave particles in moldings and joints that are difficult to remove. Superior results can be obtained by using air conditioner or furnace filter materia! which is available from plumbing supply and some hardware stores. It is available in several grades of abrasiveness, does not shed material and, since each piece lasts a long time, is very economical to use.

When using an orbital sander, it becomes expensive and time consuming to change the sandpaper whenever it becomes torn or ripped. To alleviate this problem, 1 purchase sanding belts and cut them to size to fit my sander. Depending upon the size of the belt, it is possible to get 2 or 3 pieces from a single sanding belt. These pieces last a lot longer and are less expensive to use in the long run. I found that the sand-particles often wear off before the belt ^r'P^s' M. Domingue

Here's a way to take the guesswork out of leveling chair or table legs. Place the four legs on a flat surface —the top of the table saw comes in handy for this. Hold a pencil on a '/«in. to % in. thick block of wood, then mark a point on each leg. Use a back saw to cut each leg off at the marked point. The legs are now level.

Here's a way to hide a light colored glue line on dark woods such as mahogany, cherry, walnut, and oak. Dip the end of your scratch awl into iodine, then carefully run the point of the scratch awl along the line. The iodine will darken the glue.
