Owners of Sears Craftsmen table saws and other Sears power machines should be aware of a potentially dangerous ON/OFF switch. The problem could also apply to any other manufacturers that use 110 volt switches with similar internal mechanisms.

I have a 10 in. Craftsman table saw. the kind that has the switch with a removable yellow plastic "key." A couple of months ago. the saw didn't shut off when I flipped the switch to the OFF position. Upon moving the toggle ON/OFF again, the power was cut. and the saw stopped. 1 could only imagine that a bit of sawdust must have held the internal parts of the switch in the ON setting.

It worked okay after that, or so I

thought, until the day my wife came into the house and asked me why the table saw had suddenly started up as she w alked through the shop. This lime I had to pull the plug in order lo shut it off.

The switch has been repaired, but in the future, I'm going to be sure to unplug the power cord any time I need to change the blade. I'd also suggest that if your switch should stick ON, even momentai ily. have it repaired or replaced immediately.

Editor's Note: At the request of Sears. H'f passed Mr. Collins letter along lo Emerson Electric, the company that manufactures many of the Sears Crafts man table saws. Here is their reply:

We appreciate and share Mr. Collins" interest in safety. In this instance, we are unable to offer any explanation for this phenomenon. This switch design has been used for decades on millions of power tools and has demonstrated ex

ceptional reliability. Still, it is always good practice to unplug a power tool before attempting to change the blade, in addition, if the power switch, or any other safety device, does not operate normally, you should have it repaired before continuing. Finally, power components. such as switches and motors, should only be serviced by persons specifically trained to do so.

I enjoyed making the Shoot-the-Moon Roller Ball Game from the May/June issue. After some practice, 1 was even able to get the ball into the hole that scored 500 points.

I made a few minor changes that 1 thought your readers might find of interest. Instead of using the four round felt feet. I covered the entire underside of the base with a sheet of pressure sensitive green fell. And. for the numbers on
