Woodworker

Woodworking Basics, continued shoulder on the tenon.

To socket the seal for the spindles, assemble the arms and back and sei a bevel I Photo Q) to determine the angle. The spindles enter the bottom edge of ihe rail at a slight angle, so you'll need lo trust your eye or set bevels lt> bore those sockets, loo (Photo Ri. Trim the spindle tenons to fit the sockets either on the lathe or with a chisel.

Assemble

Before gluing up the base, cut a groove with a pocketknife along the length of each tenon to allow excess glue to escape during assembly. Wipe a little glue in the sockets and on the tenons and assemble the front legs and their stretcher, then the back legs and their stretcher. Add the two side stretchers, then insert the four leg tenons in the seat sockets, rapping the legs home with a mallet if necessary.

The joints should be light enough lhat you can trim the legs to length right after assembly. I measure the front legs from ihe seal down and saw them off. holding the saw parallel to the seat bottom (Photo S). To mark ihe length of the back legs. 1 put the chair on the bench and hang the back legs over Lhe edge, positioning the seat the proper height above lhe benchtop. as shown in Photo I Cut one back leg. then rest ihree legs on the benchtop lo check the mark on the last leg before sawing it.

Before assembling lhe back and arms, tin .1 saw kerf in the arm post and hack jv»st bottom tenons for wedges, aligning the kerfs at right angles lo the grain of the seal, Assembly is a little tricky because of all those angles. First, I pui the spindles in Ihe seat, then assemble

the arms, arm posts, back posts and rail, finally slipping them into place as a unit. It's always a good idea to dry assemble first, to see if everything works. Tap the wedges home lo complete ihe assembly.

Photos S and T: Assemble the legs, stretchers and seat. Cut the front legs to length by measurement, then mark the length of the back legs using the benclilop as a straightedge.

Windsors were often painted. I like colorful chairs and have painted mine with traditional milk paint (from the Old-Fashioned Milk Paint Company. Bos 222. Groton. MA 01450) or oil-based enamels in "colonial" colors. As much fun as it is making a child's chair, the best pari is seeing >! well used by ;t satisfied client. ACT

Photo Q: Set a bevel to determine the angle of the spindle sockets in the seat: a piece of dowel extends the blade to the socket position on the rail.
