Extra Tool Mounting Provision — Although it seems like a good idea— especially in a shop where space is minimal—only the two Ryobi saws include provisions lor mounting other tools to the lable. The extension table on the Ryobi BT-3000 accepts eidier a router or jigsaw, while the table on the BT-2500 includes a cutout for a router mounting (Photo 8). Dust Control — Surprisingly, only ihe two Ryobi saws and the Skil have dust collection ports. The Ryobi BT-2500 has a 1 '/-> in. port and hose attachment; the BT-3000 and Skil. 2'/: in. ports. A dust bag is optional for the BT-3000. It's surprising to me because benchtop saws are designed for small shops, and small shops ususally fill with sawdust faster than big ones (Photo 91. Blades — Most of the saws come with cheap, stamped-steel blades. The Ryobi BT-3000 and Delta come with good quality thin-kerf carbide-tipped SejUcmfocr/Ociober 1992 Photo 8: Like ils big brother, the table on Ihe Ryobi BT-2500 has provision for mounting a router. Photo 9: Dust port on Ryobi BT-3000 attaches to a blade shroud for efficient dust pickup; the BT-2500 and Skil are the only other saws with provision for dust control. blades. Ryobi's is a chip-limiting (anti-kickback) type made by Freud. The first thing I'd do with ihe other saws is replace the steel blade with a thin-kerf carbide-tipped one. Perhaps more than any other feature, thin-kerf carbide blades are what make bcnchlop table saws practical. Because the bl-ades cut a 30—10 percent thinner kerf than conventional carbide ones of the same tooth design, they require less power to run. Sources AM'l" 4th Ave & Spring St. P.O.
