Futons. Sears sells a queen-sited cotton-filled Futon mattress for around $140. Keep in mind, though, that our Futon frame is sized for a queen-sized mattress that measures 60 in. w ide by SO in. long. We've came across same queen-sized mattresses that measure only 57 in. w ide and 72 in. Jong. You' 11 probably want to reduce the length and width of your frame if you purchase one of those smaller mattresses. -4j mentioned in the written instructions, it's best to have the mattress on hand before starting the project.

When I saw the Ratchet Table Lamp project in your March/April 1992 issue, it immediately became one of my next "things to do." f made ii from w hite oak and applied Jacobean slain for a finish.

However. I wasn't loo happy with the black lampshade, so 1 thought "Why nol a wood shade?" I bought a white linen shade for about S7 and glued i/4 in. thick by 3/4 in, wide by 12 in. long strips

of white oak to it. (A coat of Jacobean stain was added before the strips were glued.) Il looks great.

The Convertible Step Stool/Chair project in your September/October 1992 issue is a winner. The designer. Mr. A.B. Beavers, is a thoughtful woodworker, and many thanks for his plan.

When building the project, I made two slight modifications which enabled Ihe plan to belter suit my uses. First. I cut a smaller opening in ihe bottom half of the lower-, sides. This, in my opinion, eliminated ihe need for ihe spline. Secondly. I installed a simple wood pivot lock on the inside of the legs where ihey meet. This allows the chair to be picked up by its backresi handgrip and moved, without it coming unhinged.

And my Final comment. Part H is shown as 4'/■* in. wide in the Bill of Materials. However, the correct width, as shown in ihe cutting diagram on page

49. is 4'/: in.
