In liis article on preen woodworking in your January/February 1993 issue, author Roger Holmes states that he is still working on mastering the draw-knife. This isn't surprising, since the photos in the accompanying article show the tool being used with the bevel lacing up. The proper way to use this tool is lo have the bevel facing dow n (against the wood). Also. I feel that adding a secondary bevel to the cutting edge, as Roger suggests, interferes with the tool's ability to cut freely, and iherefore compromises efficiency.

Hob Kralicek. Wichita, Kans.

Roger Holmes responds: I must admit I was baffled by Boh Kral'uek's letter—

I've worked with my drawknife bevel down and found it very difficult going. Could he. I wondered, he as wrong about the tool as he think \ / am?

Seeking help. I phoned Brian Boggs. a maker of post-and-rung chairs in Berea. Kentucky, who earns his living with the drawknife and knows as much about the tool as anyone. There really isn't, he told me. a "right or a wrong" ichy to use the drawknife. Whether you place the bevel up or down depends on the position of the knife's handles in relation to the blade and. also, on the type of wink you are doing. The handles of his knife, like mine, are offset from the back of the blade about 20 degrees, roughly parallel to the bevel of the cutting edge. Like me. he uses the tool bevel up for making the straight cuts that comprise much of his work. He also works a second, or "microhevel" on the hack of his knife. This bevel, which he rounds slightly, allows him to make a smooth entry into the wood for a straight cut

Fur working inside tight curves, how ever, Boggs places the bevel down. Bevel down, he explained, the knife offers "more variety of cuts, hut more difficulty controlling the cms." Should everyone follow the same procedures'.' No. If the handles are at a different angle to the blade, parallel to its bai k for example, the tool might make straight cuts as well or better if used bevel Up. lie encourages his students to experiment with their knives, making different curs bevel up and bevel down— the knife will tell you which way is best.

I just received the May/June 1993 issue and was pleased to see the article on Ihe hand scraper. This useful tool needs to be periodically introduced as a low-tech yet effective tle\ ice.
