Sharpener's Shortcut

We all know that our turning chisels must be razor sharp to do their best work, but I find it hard to really Ho a good sharpening job on some of my chisels ... especially those with a curved cutting edge. How do I make sure I'm sharpening the entire curve?

1 use one of those blue felt-tipped marking pens to coat the entire cutting edge of the tool. Using this coating as a guide. I can sec how I'm doing. I have found that I can do a much better sharpening job using my marker as an aid.

Repeatability on a V-Block

Sometimes the simplest solutions are the best. When I needed to do some drilling with a V-block, 1 thought I'd have to re-measure every piece and restart the drill press for each cut. It occurred to me that I could measure the first one very carefully and position it in the V-block so the end being drilled was at the end of the jig. Then 1 clamped the V-block to the drill press table and made my first cut. A block of wood held flush to the end of the jig was the only alignment tool I needed for subsequent drillings. Using a loose

block was better titan fixing an end onto the V-block. because it was far easier to sweep away the chips which would otherwise plug up the bottom of the V-block.

An Easy-to-Make Tabletop Sanding Booth

around entire bottom edge

My shop doesn't have an airborne dust collection system, so I created an inexpensive benchtop "sanding booth" using clear plastic window well covers. J began by joining two of these well covers back-to-back using duct tape along the mounting flanges. I then ran a thick bead of silicone caulk around the entire bottom edge and set the assembly on a piece of hardboard. Next, using a sharp utility knife, I cut an access hole big enough to get my hands and forearms inside to work. Finally, at the back. I cut a hole of the same diameter as the nozzle of my shop vacuum. Unlike downdraft systems, this unit doesn't fight dust's natural tendency to float, but rather collects it right out of the air.
