I did the table project in about two weeks and the inlay work was very easy to complete. My wife enjoyed the table so much she wants me to make a second one. My honey-do list just got longer. Thorn Taylor Sacramento, California From a Slow-burn to Broken I'm writing about the Woodtimiing department "Down to the Finish," in the August 2004 issue. In his paragraph on "burnishing/* Steve Blenk remarks that because the process can generate a lot of heat, "A leather glove is a good idea." Yes, one's hand can get hot; no, wearing a glove is not a good idea. The only accident I have ever had in more than 50 years of working with many power tools occurred while I was wearing a glove at my lathe. I was shining up stainless steel bar stock to make cabinet pulls for our kitchen. How could a glove catch — there was nothing to catch on! But it caught Finger: Gloves in the Shop nonetheless, darn near tearing my fingers off in the process. The glove was shredded — it now hangs above my lathe as a reminder. The broken finger bone mended, but now it has a funny kink as another reminder. If Steve routinely uses a glove at the lathe and hasn't had an accident, he is lucky and/or very clever. But I certainly wouldn't advocate this practice to your readers — they could do serious damage to their hands in a New York minute!
