These folks are serious about radial arms. Their 3512-01 Contractor Duty saw is actually the smallest model they sell, but for home-shop use it could easily be the sturdiest — and heaviest — tool you ever own. Starting from the ground up, the 3512-01 has the largest footprint of the three test saws, at just over 26" x 34". The stance and sturdy leg base provide a stable platform for the heavy arm and motor assembly. This saw also has the biggest table of the test group, which just adds more helpful real estate for supporting long or wide workpieces. I wish the table were taller than it is — it's a few inches too short for my (>'3M frame, but raising the saw up on blocks is an easy fix. Sliding a 2 HP induction motor along the radial arm requires a stout arm casting, and the 3512-01 certainly delivers. The cast-iron arm only deflected .066" at its tip with the motor pulled to the end of its travel — and it's quite a reach at that: the 3512-01 can crosscut 4/4 lumber up lo 24' wide. If you're into casework construction, you'll love the extra capacity this machine offers. The motor yoke rolls on four bearings along deep tracks in the arm, and there was no noticeable side-to-side play in this movement The action is smooth as silk. 1 really appreciated the spring-loaded carriage return that uses a cable to retract the motor to the starting position. It was the only saw with this helpful feature. The Original Saw Model: 3512-01 Price: S3,100 Phone: 800-www. originalsaw. com Weight: 405 lbs. An 6" dado set won't work here: you'll need to invest in a larger dado set to accommodate this massive arbor. As far as controls go, the magnetic starter switch is mounted on the end of the arm, so you 11 have to take your hand off the motor or workpiece to turn it off. The scales for setting radial and bevel tilts are printed black on silver, so they're easy to read. The pointer for the radial scale is located about 3/8" off the scale, which could introduce some parallax error if you aren't looking at it straight on. Most of the levers for setting ripping, bevel-cutting and radial adjustment are cast metal, and they lock the machine's settings solidly.
