A "Ferrari" Router Table

What kind of woodworker needs a kit? ["Create Your Own Router Table Kit," December 2007. ] I wanted to write and thank you for the inspiration to build my new router table. Using your picture of the Woodhaven "Cadillac" table as a guide, I drew out plans for the size I wanted: my Ferrari to your Cadillac. I was also inspired to renew my subscription.

Fixing Shallow End Cuts

Regarding Chuck Leger's Router Problem [Questions & Answers, December 2007], I have a Bosch EVS router (plunge springs removed) mounted under my homemade table. After many frustrating cuts and measurements, I found the problem to be with the

Squares Are ... Not

Oh, boy! I just received the December 2007 issue and after reading the "Pick of the Tricks" I can't help myself. A carpenter's square is by and large one of the most likely of squares to be NOT square. Go ahead; grab a handful and check them for square against a quality (accurate) machinist's square. You will find that more than 50 percent aren't "square." Yes, that's a brand-new square that isn't square — knock it around the shop for a while, drop it, toss it in the back of the truck, etc., and I'm sure its accuracy won't improve. Yes, I know that wood is an "imperfect" medium, but then we strive to be as accurate as possible, right? I'm sorry, guys, but you dropped the ball on this one. The very least you could have done was to print a note of warning to this effect. Better yet — give me a "prize" for the tip: Not all squares are square.

Spindle Turning Tips

I read Betty Scarpino's article, 'Turned Holiday Ornaments," (December 2007) with interest, since I was turning some ornaments for friends as Christmas gifts at the time. They're not the same as Betty's (although I did use both of her designs as well), but the principle is the same (spindle turning).

From where I'm sitting, it seemed that Betty was doing it the hard way and took many extra steps. Instead of turning between centers, I captured one end in a fpur-

router's micro adjustment. With the router running, I observed the adjustment knob to be rotating on its own, lowering the router bit. I solved the problem by placing electrical tape on the knob to keep it from turning.

Good "Investment" Tips

I am starting to set up my home workshop and was researching tools to buy when I glanced through a copy of Woodworker's Journal, August 2007, and saw the article by Chris Marshall on "14" Band Saws Battle It Out." After reading all that Chris had to say, I came to my decision and have now purchased the Grizzly model G0457.1 know I will be very happy with this purchase and wanted to thank you guys for providing unbiased (unlike the media or politicians) information to help me make an investment that will affect my sanity.
