This modular shelf system was reborn in the shop of a reader.

is associated with his head rather than his skin. I won't even begin to address the sexist nature of his response.

Shop Wisdom

[This letter responds to the December 2008 editorial, "Life Lessons from the Shop."] "If you can't fix it with a hammer, you must have an electrical problem."

"Just because you're not bleeding, doesn't mean you're safe."

"Think of your wife as you would a piece of good lumber: sometimes the age, knots and defects make it that much more beautiful."

"If you're holding a board while applying finish on one side and drop it, the probability of it hitting the floor finish-side-up is inversely proportional to the amount of dust on the floor."

Modifying Modular Shelves

I liked Rob Johnstone's shelf system but could not use it in my home — but I could use the idea. I built the shelves two inches deep and four to six inches on the sides but left the tops off. I made a load of them and mounted them on my shop wall. Now I have storage for screws, etc., that I can easily take to whatever project I am working on.
