Time was, if your friend had a multi-tool, you were pretty safe in assuming it was a Dremel. Now, everyone's getting into the act: Bosch recently launched their 12-volt Bosch PS50 Multi-X. It's powered by Bosch's Max Litheon battery line. The soft-molded, oscillating multi-tool cuts, saws and sands by swapping out its accessories. The SA sells for $185, while The PS50-2B Multi-X Caipenter Kit (shown, which contains a few more blades), costs $205.

Carter Products' new idea is the MagFence™. It's a rip fence for your band saw, your table saw — or whatever tool you have with a table made from ferrous metal, so you can attach the fence with its accompanying magnets. Easy magnetic attachment (and detachment) means you can move the MagFence around, or use it as a table extension if you lay it down horizontally. You'll pay $79.95 for the 16" version and $89.95 for the 1914" model.

A new invention on the lower end of the price scale is the Pencil Leash™ sold through pencilleash.com,

priced at $3.99. (Admit it: as soon as you heard the

name, you knew what it was and why you'd want one.) Rather than tracking clown stray pencils, this 36"-long leash — which has been tested to 60,000 pulls — keeps them clipped conveniently to your shirt or belt. Another use of nifty technology

two-packs of the 40 or 60 inch-pound ratings sell for $35.99.

Looking to finish a project with something new? The Minwax* Water Based WoodSheen* is a stain and finish in one, in a gel formulation that makes it easier to apply to a vertical surface without worrying about getting drips in your hair — or your eyes. It dries in about an hour and comes in six different wood shades. A 12-ounce bottle sells for $7.99.

applied to woodworking is the Rockier Lid-Stay Torsion Hinge, which employs constant torque — the same thing that keeps a laptop computer open — to the lids on the boxes and chests you make. The Lid-Stay is used as both a hinge and a lid

support, keeping lids of different sizes (the Lid-Stay comes in 30, 40 and 60 inch-pound ratings) open and not crashing down on fingers. Individual Lid-Stay Torsion Hinges cost $19.99, while
