Having two caliper settings on the same tool lets you measure two different dimensions in one step.

Readers forge ahead in identifying our last mystery tool and its uses, old and new.

"I have the answer to the 'What's This' in the June issue. It is a double-sided blacksmith caliper." So said Billy Joe Kimbrell of Irondale, Alabama, as he identified the tool sent in by Bob Corbett of Sturgeon bike, Minnesota.

"This tool is used for checking the dimensions of a hot piece of iron while forging it to a specific size and shape," said David Jensen of Bellevue, Nebraska.

Wilbern K. Tipton of Acton, Georgia, clarified that the blacksmith "could make two measurements at once such as a shaft with more than one diameter or a gear blank." Fred Homich of Thousand

Oaks, California, added, "The length of the handle kept the user from getting toasty hands."

Le Volberding of Dayton, Nevada, wonders, "Why are these not made today?"

In fact, as Mark Beall of Havelock, North Carolina, notes when he says they're "used for the same reason as our modern double-ended calipers," they are. Their function today is more likely '"for checking the size of two different turning diameters," says Walter Lees of Phoenix, Arizona.
