Slick Solutions that Save Time

Slicker Surfaces with Wax Paper

Rubbing wax paper on your table saw, jointer or planer tables will keep them slippery smooth and rust-free. It's a good substitute for paste wax.

Tack Your Tails

When I have a lot of dovetailed drawer boxes to assemble, I use my pin nailer instead of clamps for the glue-ups. I shoot a 1" headless pin through the top and bottom of each dovetailed corner. The tiny pins are barely noticeable, and they hold the joints securely until the glue sets. Works great for me.

Web Tool Inventory

We all should take pictures of our tools for insurance purposes, but don't store the photos

in your shop or house. Here's a better solution: create an email account on your favorite web browser to use as an online tool inventory. Then, email each of your digital photos to this account, with the name of the tool identified on the "subject" line. Create a spreadsheet that catalogs the photos, and email that to your tool account as well. Now, in the event of a fire or theft, you can access your inventory from wherever you are whenever you need to. Be sure to log in to the account periodically to keep it active.

Take Finishing to the Mat

Instead of throwing away the old plastic carpet protector mat under my desk chair, I cut it into squares for use during finishing and gluing. If you turn the mat upside down, those little plastic spikes are perfect for suspending your project above the bench so excess finish or glue has a place to pool. The spikes won't leave marks, and the mats are easy to clean with a power washer. Or, just flex them to loosen the dried buildup.
