Mystery tool's true identity rams its way through the guesses.

Through the genius of creative hydraulics,

The barnyard location of Keith Crowie of Cheyenne, Wyoming's mystery tool find inspired much speculation about its origin. Phil Trierweiler of Roscndalc, Missouri, thought it was part of a hog oiler. John A. Iindholm of Omaha, Nebraska, guessed "cattle horn weight put on young cattle's horns to eventually make the horn curve downward."

And Geoff Edgmond of Americus, Georgia, said, "It's a seat off of farm equipment. I always wondered about the hole in the middle, but the more I thought about it, the more I decided I didn't want to know."

more than Geoff. Leslie and Marion Smith of

Airville, Pennsylvania, in fact, wrote a detailed description of the item: "We believe that the item dug up is a hydraulic ram head. In our area, the ram usually brought water from a spring which was on a lower part of the farm and pumped into a cistern which held the water for use at a later date and was usually around the barn area to water the cows, horses, etc." The Smiths concluded, "No, we arc not Amish —just old!"
