A ROUTER IN THE BUILDING?

_____I | f you're like a lot of the folks

^r mV * I who'll be picking up this issue

of "Woodworking Around the House," your tool collection is sturdy, serviceable — and basic: a handheld drill, an oscillating sander and a circular or jigsaw (maybe even both). You're a participant in one of the hallmarks of true woodworking: making do with what you've got — and that's great.

But if you've ever heard a whisper of temptation in your ear to pick up another tool or two, let me tell you what you're missing. A router, for instance, is a tool that adds a great deal of ease and enjoyment to your work. It can also make projects like the Modular Bookcases (page 62) and the Garden Cart (page 20) much more manageable for you. A table saw is another shop mainstay — put it together with that router and its bits, and you'll be able to easily tackle the Homemade Wooden Cabinet Pulls on page 58 and the Kitchen Cabinets starting on page 38.

Of course, there's nothing like a few clamps to help you along with your new woodworking hobby — like the ones being used in the Ultimate Garage Fixture (page 14). And if you plan on sticking with your hand drill for a while, check out the cool Drilling Jigs on page 8, which will serve you well keeping your holes on the straight and narrow (at least until you invest in that drill press you've been eyeing...)

At the end of the day, you can use whatever tools you find in your arsenal of shop supplies to tackle the projects in this issue, but let me give you fair warning: If you're like most woodworkers, you might just find yourself tool shopping very soon!
