Yep, winter is back. It used to put a real damper on my Q woodworking, since I have a garage shop. m But, that's all changed, thanks to wood- turning. "Cold-and-dreary" has become my turning season. All it took was a little corner of the basement, a mini lathe and a few turning tools. Now, I'm going strong until spring making bowls, pens, lidded boxes, ornaments, hollow forms — you name it! Even better, most of my stock comes from the scrap pile. If you haven't tried woodturning yet, winter is a great time to start, and this Woodworker's Journal Special Interest Publication can help you turn that corner (couldn't help the pun...). Flip to our feature story on page 8 to select the right tools for getting up and running. Ease into things by turning green bowls (page 12), some simple holiday ornaments (page 50) or the salt and pepper set on page 38. Then, polish those skills by diving into the classic reproduction bedside table shown above or Kerry Pie "Shaker-inspired Woven Rocker," near the back of this magazine. You can even change things up by combining carving with turning to make Single Barley Twists (see page 22). All this good cheap fun is waiting for you! Need a cure for the winter blues? It's simple: Start making shavings. Winter 2009 woodworkersjournal.com Chris Marshall Special Projects Editor Larry N.
