Lightly sand all surfaces and edges with medium grit sandpaper to remove any burrs or tool marks. Note: when sanding, make sure all edges are kept square and sharp.

After all pieces have been made, dry fit them to check for accuracy. If any parts fit poorly, make the necessary corrections.

Assemble and glue the box together (see the Exploded View drawing). Make sure to keep everything square while clamping.

Finishing and staining

Start the finishing process by sanding the box all over, following the grain direction. Begin with an 80 grit paper, then with 120 grit paper, followed by 180 grit paper.

Coat the box with your finish of choice to achieve a smooth, satiny sheen. Tip: shellac slightly diluted with alcohol works well for this project. Apply three or four thin coats, sanding lightly and then wiping with a damp cloth between each application.
