Wood: light colored wood of choice—nine pieces 1/4" x 4-5/8:' x 7" (for the interior pieces); dark colored wood of choice—eight pieces 1 /4" x 4-5/8" x 7" (for the interior pieces), two pieces 1/4" x 4-5/8" x 7" (for the end caps) Tools: scroll saw with assorted blades -drill with assorted bits including a 7/64"-Dia. bit; belt sander; drum sander; bench knife or chisel Temporary-bond spray adhesive Sandpaper, assorted grits Clamp Carpenter's glue Clothes hanger (for cutting the hinge pin) Watco Danish oil or clear oil finish of choice V": iti instructions Cut the pieces Size the wood to the dimensions indicated in the Supplies list and as shown in Fig. 1. Transfer the patterns to the appropriate stock and cut out each piece (see Fig. 2). Dry assemble the interior pieces, making sure to alternate the light and dark woods (see Fig. 3). Assembly Align pieces and insert hinge before clamping (see Fig. 9). Glue and clamp the interior pieces together (see Fig. 10). When the glue has set, touch up the edges with a belt sander to make them uniform and sand the inside smooth (see Figs. 11 and 12) When gluing on the end caps, be sure to align edges where the lid and box meet (see Fig. 13). Sand all outside surfaces as shown in Fig. 14. Apply finish of choice to the box assembly and then attach the box hardware. |-i ¥ Fig. 1. Size the stock. It's a good idea to mark the pieces so they can be easily matched up while assembling. Cut a length of hanger for the hinge pin (see Fig. 4); it should be about 5-1/2" long. Mark and drill holes where indicated on the pattern as shown in Figs. 5 and 6. Next, sand the pieces to remove any burring from the edges (see Fig. 7). Using a bench knife or chisel, shave a little bit of stock off the hinge area on both sides of each piece to allow the hinge to move freely (see Fig. 8). |
