the nose, and the cheek. Smooth the tool marks in the girl's face. Here, the density of the wood works to your advantage (see Fig. 6). Note: I never use sandpaper because it fuzzes up the wood. Instead, I create smoothness by "planing" the surface with a skew chisel. Remember, sandpaper dulls the wood. Wood that is cut with razor sharp tools is shiny. Step 9. To carve the hair, first round off the outside edges to created the rounded head shape. Next, with the No. 5-20mm gouge, make several large grooves to show the general flow of the hair. Make these grooves fairly random in depth and length. Within these larger grooves, make smaller cuts with the No. 4-6mm gouge. Finally, with the V tool, make a few accent cuts to capture the deepest shadows. Try to show clusters of hair rather than individual strands as shown in Fig. 7. Step 10. Sketch in the fingers and thumb (see Fig. 8). Note that part of the girl's right hand shows above the left.

Step 11. Make a stop cut above the thumb and first finger of the left hand and lower the wood of the right hand at least 1/8". Carve the grooves between the fingers and shape them. It is not necessary to show knuckles and fingernails. Keep the hands subtle. If you make the hands too detailed, you will "age" them (see Fig. 9).

Step 12. Carve the fold at the inner elbow. Round the sleeve at the upper edge of the arm. Carve in the angle of the shoulders and shape the body.

Finishing

In finishing, I wanted to bring out the warm tones of the wood, so I used a light oak stain on it. I sealed the wood first to make sure the application would be smooth. Remember, carving exposes end grain which can turn darker if the wood is not sealed before it is stained.
