When I am carving dense wood—walnut, cherry, oak, and, for this project, abura—I use the mallet on all but the smallest cuts. The carver's mallet is shaped to be ready to use at any position. It is large enough so that it will make a solid hit even with little aiming. The weight of the mallet, usually from 16 to 20 ounces, supplies a given amount of inertia which controls the depth or thrust of a cut. On slice cuts with the mallet, the arm or the hand holding the tool is often resting on the work, with the hand grasping the tool firmly working in opposition to the force of the mallet. On plunge cuts, the tool is struck a specific number of times to control the depth of the cut. Some professional carvers are so adept with the mallet that they seldom set it ^own, even when doing tiny ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ Work the tool straight ahead. Never pry or twist. Carving tool steel has a high carbon content which, while great for holding an edge, makes the tool too brittle for twisting and prying. The V tool is especially vulnerable; the sharper the V, the more fragile the tool. If you are a novice carver, you may want to stay with basswood or butternut for this carving.
