the 11/16"-Dia. hole in the back.

Clean up the edges and sand all surfaces smooth and

you're ready to get into the carving.

Chip carving

Transfer the chip carving pattern to the backer. If you have experience in chip carving, it's pretty straightforward and easy from here, and I imagine you can just go for it and not worry about the rest of this section.

If you aren't experienced, don't panic, it's still pretty easy.

Clamp the piece down so it's steady using

Getting started

I used tulip poplar because I got a good deal on a bunch of it that was cut at a local sawmill a few years back, but pine or any of several other species will work just fine. Mainly, you want to use something that is sta-
