CARIBOU WALL HANGINGS

by Dirk Boeiman

Patterns Located in Full Size Pattern Section No. 1!

Attach the pattern to the wood using spray adhesive and drill all blade entry holes. Beginning with the inside cuts, saw along the pattern lines. Once all cuts have been made, remove the pattern and sand as needed. Apply finish of choice according to manufacturer's instructions.

Decorate your wall hanging

The 28" length of leather lacing can be tied at the top center of the silhouette with a loose overhand knot (see Fig. 1). String on the bead combinations as shown in the Assembly Drawing (located in Full Size Pattern Section No. 1). The other end of the lace can then be attached with another loose overhand knot. Note: the knots need to be loose enough to thread the four simulated eagle feathers between the knot and the wood. Slide the simulated eagle feathers under the knots, then insert the white fluffy plumes to cover the shafts of the eagle feathers.

Use the reversed double half hitch knot shown in Fig. 2 to attach the two 40" lengths of leather lacing to the wood cutout as shown in the Assembly Drawing. As you attach the lacing to the wood, the ends of the lacing should be of unequal lengths, with the outside ends being about 15" long. Note: the Assembly Drawing shows the knot spacing on only one 50

lower lace and the bead combinations are shown on the other lower lace. The knot spacing and bead combinations of both lower laces should be identical.

Begin by stringing the top bead combination onto the shorter lace and tie an overhand knot below the beads so that the knot is about 4" below the reversed double half hitch knot. String on the next bead combination for this lace and tie an overhand knot below them about 6" from the previous knot. Prepare a simulated eagle feather by soaking the shaft in warm water to soften it. Next, trim the top side of the feather shaft as shown in Fig. 3. This will create a channel in the feather shaft where the leather lacing will lie.

To attach the simulated eagle feather, place the feather face forward with the leather lacing in the shaft channel and wrap a piece of red felt around the lacing and feather shaft. Hold this assembly together and wrap a 12" length of artificial sinew around the assembly as shown in Fig. 3. The simulated eagle feather should have a portion of lacing and the end bead combination laying on top of it. Next, slide the feather combination shown in the Assembly Drawing under the beads at the end of the lacing.

On the longer lace, string the upper bead combination and hold in place with an overhand knot about 7-1/4" down from the reversed double half hitch knot. Place a red plume on top
