Cut the upper and lower pocket blanks to shape with the band saw (see Figs. 2 and 3).

Sand and assemble

Sand the pocket blanks to remove the saw marks. A palm sander works well for the top pocket blank, while a spindle sander is ideal for the bottom one (see Fig. 4).

Begin the assembly process by spreading a thin coat of wood glue on the edges of the two pocket blanks (see Fig. 5). Gently sandwich the pockets between the corresponding side pieces—remember those 9/16" strips? Clamp the top and bottom assemblies simultaneously (see Fig. 6). Remove excess glue with a clean wet cloth and let dry. Once dry, remove the damps and scrape off any dried glue that was missed earlier.

Shape the top

The Treasure Chest's top is shaped by successive cuts on the table saw and the use of a jack plane. Transfer

the end pattern to the lid assembly and place it on the table saw in a ripping position with the pocket facing up (see Fig. 7). With the pattern toward the blade, make a rip down the length of the lid assembly. The height of the blade should be just beneath the pattern line. Turn the lid assembly around, cut edge against the fence, and make another rip. Reset the fence and the height of the blade and repeat the procedure until the entire lid curve has been roughed out. Finish shaping the curve with the jack plane (see Fig. 8). Sand the curve.

Install hinges and finish

Install the hinges 1-1/2" in from either end as shown in the Exploded View Drawing. Make sure the ends are flush. Sand the box assembly.

Finish the project with three coats of tung oil or boiled linseed oil—wipe on with a clean cloth and wipe dry after a few minutes. Wait a day before applying each successive coat of oil, sanding between coats with 400 grit paper. After finishing, install the hinged catch, ti
