Creative Woodworks & crafts 2000-08, страница 25[Staining } Delta's new Gel Stain Medium lets you make a fairly transparent stain I out of any of their more than 250 colors of acrylic paint. I used to thin the paint with water, but this product is superior. The color is easier to apply evenly with minimal grain raising. Separate the pieces by color, i.e., yellow, blue, black, etc., then mix equal amounts of gel stain medium and paint. Use a small measuring cup when there are a lot of pieces to stain (see Fig. 8). As each piece is stained, wipe off the excess with a clean dry cloth. When you need a only small amount of color, use a coffee can lid as a mixing pallet as shown in Fig. 9. The white portion of the face is painted with Gleams Pearl Finish without thinning. The eye recess is painted with Violet Ice (see Fig. 10). Gluing Place wax paper on a flat surface and edge glue the pieces together. Keep the glue bead toward the back side of the project to prevent squeeze-out (see Fig. 11). Position the glued-up project on the backer material and trace its outline. Cut the backer at a 15 degree angle toward the back side and about 1/8" inside the traced line, as shown by the red line in Fig. 12. Glue to the project using several small C-clamps to insure a good bond and scraps of plywood to protect the surface (see Fig. 13). Finishing Apply several coats of matte spray varnish to both sides of the project. When dry, make a thin glaze, about 60/40, of gel stain medium and Blueberry paint. Brush this mixture on the tail feathers to highlight the details (see Fig. 14). By applying matte varnish first, the glaze can be lightened by wiping with a water dampened cloth to your liking. Before gluing the eye in place with 5-minute epoxy, bore a hole through the backer so that an air bubble isn't captured under the clear glass eye. Attach the sawtooth hanger and then hide the crackers! f;jj | Fig. 1. Transfer the | patterns to the stock. Fig. 2.
