INSTRUCTIONS

Make the base

Begin by cutting out the base piece. Cut the cross shaped mortise in the center with a No. 7 or larger blade in your scroll saw. Check it against the tenons for a good tight fit. Rout the top edges of the base using the 1/4"-Dia. beading bit set 3/16:' over the surface of your router table. Next, cut the feet to shape and glue them to the lower surface of the base using wood glue.

Make the upright assembly

Cut the one wide and two narrow uprights as indicated on the pattern. Bore blade entry holes and make all inside cuts, then cut around the perimeter. Note: the tenon has to be cut before cutting the outlines, as a straight edge is needed to guide it through the saw or router. With the router and a 1/4"-Dia. straight bit, or the table saw, reduce the tenons to 1/4" thick (shave 1/16" off of each side). Referring to the Exploded View Drawing, glue the narrow uprights perpendicular to the wide one.

Make the arm assembly

To make the arms, lay out the slots on each part and cut to shape with the scroll saw. Be sure to have one upper and one lower piece. Test fit the parts and adjust as necessary to get a good fit. Once you are satisfied, glue the pieces together (see the Exploded View Drawing).

Assemble the candelabra

Continuing to refer to the Exploded View Drawing, glue the tenons on the bottom of the upright assembly into the cross shaped mortise cut into the base. Glue the arm assembly to the top of the uprights.

Cut out the five escutcheons and glue them in place. Drill a 3/32'-Dia. hole in the center of each arm/escutcheon assembly, and one at the center point of the middle of the arms. Place a little wood glue on the bottom of each candle cup and use a No. 6 x 3/4" drywall screw to attach the cups gently into the arms. Use the 1-1/2" screw in the middle candle cup (drill a 1/8" pilot hole down through the center). This will reinforce the joint with the upright (it is an end-grain joint, and will be extremely weak with just glue.) U j
