Woodstock Wood Show 2000

by We.s Dcmarest

We have attended the Woodstock Wood Show in Woodstock, Ontario, Canada for two years in a row now, and we slill haven't seen the entire event. That is mostly because we spend so much time chatting with all the folks who stop by Bob Ford's booth where wc display the samples of the patterns that are produced by All American Crafts, Inc. and demonstrate scroll sawing techniques.

Perhaps the highlight of this year's trip was meeting Joe and Sarah Daniel, the producers of the show. They have been putting this event together for at least the last 15 years and keep making it better each year with a mix of commercial vendors, demonstrators, crafters, and entertainment that set this show apart from lhe others. Their efforts seem quite daunting when you get a chance to stand near Joe or Sarah, or any of their family for that matter, and observe their attention to lhe countless questions and on-thc-spot decisions they handle 011 a minute-by-minute basis. No matter when you see them, they maintain a calm and pleasant disposition with never a harsh word or negative comment and are quick to offer

suggestions that cnhance anyone's visit. Our hats arc off to you, Joe and Sarah, and to your family and slaff outstanding! One other small reflection i.s that Joe and Sarah own and operate a sawmill business that has been in their family since 1818. When you consider a record like that, you can see why the show continues to be the best; how could they let it be any other way.

The place where we spent the most time (besides our own booth) was the open entry art and craft contest. This year there were over 300 entries in all lhe categories and one of the first times that there were no enlries from the United States. The following photographs are a mere sampling of the range of subject matter thaL was represented. Vicky Talbot the coordinator, poinled out that the show is not juried but is judged, and awards are given to those whose work is considered tops by a panel of judges.

As you can see, the competition is extremely tough, and we don't envy the judges' task. Between lhe magnitude of the show and the Canadian hospitality, you can't go wrong. Hope to sec you there next year. A
