Crafts September 2002 INSTRUCTIONS Wood is not the only thing that can be cut on a scroll saw. Many saws are capable of cutting glass, rock, paper and metal, along with many other materials. Often times that first step of trying something new is the hardest. My hope is that these simple whimsical patterns will not only be fun but will encourage you to try something new! By sandwiching the metal between two pieces of 1 /8" or 1/4" wood, I am able to cut it using a regular No. 5 skip tooth blade (I can also cut at top speed, I hate cutting slow!). There are several methods of cutting metal. This is my preference, especially for thinner gauged metals. Although I chose copper here, you can use whatever metal you want. The metal needs to be heavy enough to hold its shape, yet pliable enough to bend. SanOwich the sheet of metal belweeri Ihe Iwo pieces of wood. Wrap tape around the wood to secure it together. Affix the pattern to the wood with spray adhesive. Bore for any inside cuts. Using the No. 5 wood blade, cut the pattern pieces to shape. Separate the metal from the wood and discard the wood. Using the needle nose pliers and referring to the photograph, bend the metal as indicated on the pattern. Hint: it's a good idea to wear work gloves during this procedure. To add more shape to the frog body, use the ball peen hammer and gently tap on the underside of the body. Use a stack of newspapers to cushion the metal. ££ Patterns Located in Full Size Pattern Section No. 2! JflkiNi IMALS _y Marilyn Carmin of Heartland Creations |
