HANDISTOP THE HANDY FENCE STOP Special Techniques (Cont'd) file. Sanding is the last step to remove file marks. What remains is cutting the grooves in the stiles and rails to hold the panel edges. These grooves are cut before the frame and panel are assembled. Though the table saw with dado head will take care of grooving the straight side stiles and bottom rail, it cannot be used for cutting the groove in the arched portion of the upper rail. This operation can be done with a shaper or by hand with a scratch stock which is a shop-made tool consisting of a cutting blade of the proper width clamped with bolts to a slotted handle with a notch to serve as a fence. Repeated passes are made to scrape the groove around the arch. Photo shows router base with three wing carbide slot cutter. Pilot bearing is below cutter. Router base rests on the surface of the arched rail while slot cutter grooves the edge. A much easier method is to use a three-wing slot cutter with a portable router. When using this very versatile tool, the router base is supported on the surface of the workpiece and the cutter's ball bearing pilot rides against the edge, cleanly cutting a Vi inch deep groove.
