Necktie and Ihfc Belt Holder cG'ft

Shop

There's room for up to sixteen neckties and belts on this easy-to-make wall hung organizer. Its small size makes it suitable for hanging on the inside of a closet door, while the mirror will come in handy when you're struggling to get that knot just right.

Ours is made from walnut, but use any wood that strikes your fancy. Although 3A in. thick stock could be used for the mirror frame (A and B) and the shelf (E), a small piece like this looks best when made from '/j in. stock. The octagonal spindles (F) can be made from either IVi in. stock or glued up 3A in. thick material.

The stock for the mirror frame is best obtained by ripping V* in. thick material to a width of lA in. To cut the Vi in. by V4 in. rabbet for the glass (D), set the table saw blade to a height of V* in., then locate the rip fence as shown in Fig. 1, Make the first cut, then relocate the fence so that the second cut removes the remaining material. Next, miter the ends as shown, then apply glue and clamp with a web clamp. The keyed miter jig, shown on page 49, makes it easy to cut the slot for the '/«in. key splines (C).

To make the spindles (F), start with about a 5 in. length of l'/i in. square stock, then lay out and mark the octagonal shape on one end. With the table saw blade set at 45 degrees, and with the stock supported against the rip fence, make the four 45 degree cuts as shown in the top view. Use a push stick to keep hands and fingers away from the saw blade. Now crosscut the spindles to a length of two inches and bore the holes for parts I and G.

Cut the remaining parts before assembling as shown. The frame is joined to the shelf (E) with glue and three 1 in. long by no. 8 wood screws. The knob (H) can be cut with a 3A in. plug cutter, or it can simply be V* in. diameter dowel stock cut to a Vi in. length. Use a plastic or metal washer for parts J.

Triangle points (K) are used to join the glass to the frame. For the spokes (G), we painted birch dowel stock a dark brown. A good penetrating oil will provide an attractive final finish.
