Delta is also the only machine that comes wired with a 220-volt wall plug — very helpful. A dust hood is also standard. There are no built-in casters in the stand, but it fits into a rolling base, sold separately. Final verdict: the 22-790X is a worthy choice for the professional shop.

Looks Can be Deceiving...

You'll notice that the other four planers in the test group share some similarities in general design and specification. As you might guess, manufacturers sometimes use common sources for castings and other components. However, these machines are not carbon copies, particularly in terms of their cutterhead styles. But, what they do share in common is beneficial for us: precision-ground cast-iron beds, four massive 2"-diameter steel posts and an iron top case that provides rock-solid support for the cutterhead and feed rollers.

The 22-790X has 16 and 30 FPM feed speeds. The faster setting leaves larger knife marks, as you'd expect, but it will knock stock down to size in no time. Each turn of the depth crank winds the head up or down a full 1/8"; I liked the finer l/16"-per-crank adjustments better on the other planers, because

These pro-duty planers feature a serrated steel feed roller and a row of anti-kickback fingers to keep aggressive stock removal under control.

I think those final cleanup passes will be easier to set more carefully.
