knives is a breeze. Simply unbolt the top plate, remove two steel bars over each knife, and lift the knives out with the included magnetic knobs. The knives have two slotted holes that fit over a pair of pins on the cutterhead, which registers them automatically. They shift left and right slightly to adjust for nicks. I removed and replaced one of the knives in less than five minutes flat. These knives are also double-edged and disposable. They cut clean, smooth surfaces on the test lumber at both speeds, and chip collection was quite tidy.

I was less impressed with the steel-frame, roller support tables. They were finicky to adjust level with the planer's bed, but they do provide plenty of workpiece support once you get them set up properly.

Casters in the base make it easier to move this heavy tool around, and they lock with a foot pedal. The JET also sets the low bar of pricing for

Pushing or pulling a knob switches the two-speed gearbox from dimensional to finish planing speeds.

General International 30-125 CE M1

General International's planer made a strong showing in this test. Its 14" support tables create slightly more than 4' of workpiece platform, which will help keep those long and unwieldy boards manageable. Two steel rollers on top make it easy to feed boards back over the machine to the operator, for those long surfacing sessions when two people share the job.

General outfits the cutterhead with three steel knives, mounted over jack screws and held in place with standard gib bars. They must be manually set each time you have them resharpened. But, unlike the Delta or Steel City planers, the knives on the 30-125 CE Ml are double-edged, so you can flip them to a fresh edge before it's time to send them away for grinding.

During the planing test, this machine scored above-average marks for planing quality at both speed settings. Surfaces were impressively polished and largely mill-mark free. Dust collection was efficient, through the machine's steel dust hood and 5" hose port. Casters are standard, and so is a large kill switch. Here's a solid contender at a mid-range price.

Three long V-belts deliver power from the motor underneath to the cutterhead above. Notice also the pair of table lock knobs on these machines: tightening them helps to keep snipe at bay.

JET JWP-15DX

JET has incorporated the best feature of benchtop planers into their JWP-15DX Planer: quick-change, self-indexing knives. It's a stroke of genius in my book. You'll never face the hassle of tweaking jack screws, retightening gib bars or correcting uneven knife settings with this cutterhead. Swapping
