Scale Speeds Pocket-Hole Spacing

Here's an easy modification you can make to your Kreg jig to make locating and spacing pocket screw joints even faster. Just draw a scale on the jig's mounting board with a permanent marker. I made a 10" scale on both sides of the jig. Using this scale, I can simply "eyeball" my screw locations on a workpiece accurately and without reaching for a tape measure.

Two Power Switches Double Your Turning Safety

In my woodworking business, I use a lathe almost every day. It bothered me that there was only one power switch on my lathe, and it was mounted on the left end of the machine. What I've done — and we all should do for improved safety — is to install a second power switch on the right end of the lathe. All you need to do is buy a router table power switch and glue four rare-earth magnets to the back, then plug your lathe into this second power switch. Mount the switch near the tailstock of your machine. With a switch on both ends, you can shut the tool off quickly with either hand.

Cleaner Drilling with Pivoting Vacuum Jig

I've improved dust and chip collection considerably at my drill press using this adjustable jig for my shop vac hose. The hose port friction-fits into a couple of lengths of PVC pipe solvent-welded to an elbow. The pipe slides back and forth in a bracket made of scrap. A wingbolt tightens against the pipe, so I can move and lock the pipe closer or further from the drill bit as needed. The pipe bracket mounts to a base made of plywood with a pivot joint for added adjustability. It attaches to a T-track on my drill press table with a star knob and bolt. Now, I can direct suction right where I need it.
