Pen Turning's New "Two-in-One" Tool

Rockler's Pen Press/Drilling Jig (item 24577) has notched, self-centering jaws to hold different sizes of pen blanks vertically for initial drilling. Then, during assembly, countersunk holes keep the horizontal pen centered between the jaws. Their "two-in-one" tool sells for $89.99.

Porter-Cable's OMNIJIG Joinery System"

comes in 24" (77240) and 16" (55160) models, both with "set and forget" template positioning stops and router bit depth gauges for repeatability. Color-coded onboard instructions will help you make a variety of dovetails or custom joints. The 24" sells for $599; the 16" for $429.

Sharpen Individual Knives-

Powermatic's "Byrd1-" system puts helical cutterheads —

four-sided indexable carbide knife inserts — on their planers and jointers. A quarter turn pivots each knife to a new, sharp side without impacting other knives. Prices vary from around $800 for a 6" jointer to around $2,000 for 15" or 20" planers.
