The tighter the boards are snuggled together, the thinner the glue line. When the two pieces of wood are close together, there will be very few glue-to-glue bonds, thus a very strong joint. When the board surfaces are far apart, there will be multiple glue-to-glue bonds, and the joint will be weak. Both surfaces should be straight, sound and square as well as free of saw and jointer marks. Any burned, glazed or burnished edges should be reworked. The adhesive must penetrate into the wood cells — thus water-based glues do not work well on oily woods like teak or rosewood or on boards that are dirty or oily.
