Say hello to book-matching and veneer! www.wmhtoolgroup.com • 800-274-6848 Band Saws with Bigger Bites Fourteen-inch band saws are smart choices for home shops. They're moderately priced and capable — except, of course, for big resawing. To resaw boards wider than 6", you need to add a riser block to the frame and crank up the blade tension to make the saw do what it's really not designed to do — until now. JET and General International have just released two band saws that fit the 14" category but offer double the resawing capacity — a full 12" — without risers! JET's approach with the new JWBS-14DXPRO ($899.99) is to stretch and reinforce the cast-iron frame to take the place of a riser block. The saw has a beefier spring to handle the higher tension of blades up to 3/4" wide. For other amenities, you get a quick-release blade tensioner (very helpful!), ball-bearing blade guides and rack-and-pinion guard adjustment. This 1' HP saw takes 105" blades — the same size made for 14" saws with riser blocks. So, standard blades won't be hard to find from many sources. General International's engineers doubled the resawing in a different way. They split the cast-iron frame on the new 90-200 Ml saw and inserted a column that cranks up and down, similar to a radial-arm saw. The adjustable spine allows the saw to accept standard 93V2" blades for 6" resawing, 105" blades for 12" resawing, or any length in between. Just wind the frame up or down to suit it. Like the JET, General's saw has a blade quick release, bearing guides, a rip fence and 4" dust port. Both saws run at two speeds for cutting wood or metal. But, the General has a larger table and a bigger IV2HP motor, plus a worklight. At press time you could put one of their units in your shop for $1,459. 72 February 2009 Woodworker's Journal |
