Here's a radial-arm-inspired 15" band saw with an adjustable frame that takes a range of blades and resaws wood up to 12" wide. It has a 16" x 16" table and IVzHP motor. Street price: $1,459. www.general.ca • 888-949-1161

look closely: there's a copious 15 inches of metal in front of the blade - when it's raised to IV4".

That means you can crosscut wider workpieces or get those long and heavy boards started confidently when ripping. The saw has a tool-free riving knife and guard system that moves with the blade. Or, set the riving knife low for cutting dadoes or rabbets. A Biesemeyer fence is standard, with either 36" or 52" fence rails and a side support table. Both of the fence packages include a storage drawer with an internal divider.

Inside the cabinet, there's a hefty one-piece trunnion that tilts left, and you can choose between a 3- or 5HP Marathon motor. The saw also has a unique dual-draw 4" dust port to keep the innards clean. Top it all off with an arbor lock, a clever one-piece arbor nut/washer and 50-tooth blade, and it seems that Delta's new Unisaw ($2,800 to $3,100) will carry on the longstanding tradition proudly.

There's no question that circular saws have their place in woodworking. But, just try to cut a straight line without running the saw against a straightedge. I sure can't! And, even a straightedge doesn't prevent kickback or reduce tearout on delicate veneered plywood.

Totally Retooled Unisaw

Nearly 80 years ago, Delta Machinery rolled out the first Unisaw®. Building on that heritage, this year Delta presents a completely redesigned and updated Unisaw.

For starters, it's made and assembled entirely in the United States. How often do you see that anymore? A conspicuous difference on the new machine is that both the blade tilt and height adjustment wheels are mounted in front. The new layout sure makes it convenient to tilt the blade while watching the setting. Situated between the cranks is the bevel tilt scale. It has a large clock-style display, accurate to 1/2 degree, that's easy to read without parallax distortion.

Topside, the new Unisaw has a bigger 30" x 41" cast-iron table and,
