Give Cabinet Doors a Leg Up During Finishing

Finishing both sides of a cabinet door at the same time poses problems. You could stand it up or perhaps hang it from something, but it really is a process done best with the door laid flat. It once occurred to me that 1 could make "legs" for my doors to hold them up off the worksurface during finishing. I fasten a pair of small scrap legs into the hinge mortise areas with short screws and drive a longer screw through the hole that will receive the doorknob screw. This gives me a triangulated base. I finish the side with the legs

and screw facing up, then flip the door over and finish the other side. When I'm through, the holes in the mortises will be hidden by the hinges.

A Smashing Solution for Disposable Brushes

I keep a bundle of bamboo skewers in the shop, because I find them helpful for many different tasks. My favorite use for them is to create quick, disposable brushes. Just crush one end by smashing it with a hammer on a hard surface. They make great applicators for spreading glue or even paint. You can find these skewers at most grocery stores, and they're cheap. Even better, there's no messy cleanup — just toss them when you're finished.

Shop-made Hook Rules wi

A hook rule is useful for woodworking, but instead of spending the extra money to buy one, I make mine with shop supplies instead. 1 use a couple of rare-earth magnets to turn conventional rules into hook rules. On thicker steel rules, just snap a large magnet right to the end, as shown in the photo here. It forms a perfect 90° "hook" to align the end of the rule precisely

with the end of a work piece. For thinner rules, place the magnet on the rule's face so a portion of il extends past the ride's end. Then affix a smaller magnet or even a machine nut under the larger one in the overhang area. Push the smaller magnet against the rule's end to form the hook.
