At 42". Rikon lowered over others: it can drill into a workpiece up to about 14" tall. A l/2hp motor, big chuck and stout hell drive were up to lough testing. The tool had impressively low spindle runout (only .001") and a spot lo stow the chuck key — nice.

This machine has a cast feed handle t ia( I found less comfortable to use

JET's digital readout I left) helps yuu keep labs on spinning hits when levering the continuous variable speed up or down. That feature is delivered through shiv style pulleys Iright) that open or close automatically to change spindle speeds.

repetitively. Rubber knobs are easier on the palm. Il also nearly touches the motor tension lever behind, which grazes your fingers if you use the back handle. Ouch.

The depth-adjust collar stopped the chuck accurately, but its flip-lock scraped the head casting occasionally. My verdict: A few design tweaks and a task light would help refine this $319 contender.

Benchtop drill presses have been manufactured and sold in the U.S. since at least the 1930s, and jossibly before. They are listed among the products of the E C. Stearns and Company of Syracuse, NawYork. lormed in 1877.

the way. Most of the handle caps were prone to falling off. The depth stop collars turned roughly on extra flashing. And its l/3hp motor came close to stalling several limes in spade bit testing. More horsepower would add value to the lop-end price here arid make this tool's many virtues outshine a couple of minor quirks.

JET JDP-12

The upsides to this JET are its truckload of standard items: continuous variable speed; digital readout to track bit rpm; 5/8" chuck: crisp laser crosshairs powered by the tool — in) batteries; and a table roller that extends horizontal support to a generous 16'A". The table casing is even easier lo clamp to. thanks to a 1/fi" Hat area around the rim. A screw-in LEI) lasklight is also supplied. All pluses.

On llie flip side, a few little annoyances got in

Rotating Rikon s collar type depth stop Heft) enables you to set drilling depth off ota convenient scale. The tool's 5/8"-capacity chuck (right) accepts a wide range ol Forstner and oilier bit or cutter sizes.
