Want a full-featured drill press for a drill/driver price? Ryobi could be your machine. II comes with handy variable speed, digital rprn readout, lasers, task light and ihe most clamp-friendly table of lliein all. In use, the feed handle knobs were too small for a larger hand. Otherwise, this modestly sized entry kepi pace with the bigger tools.

One oddity lo note: On my test lool. the table support handle didn't seal properly in the casting, which made the support nearly impossible to lock securely. Craftsman's lever fil it, which quick-fixed the problem. Still, if we gave

Speaking of value, how about a drill press thai not only provides a big 3/4hp motor arid 5/8" chuck bul also llie versatility of morphing into an oscillating spindle sander? Shop Fox packs two tools in one in the

midpriced W1668. Very useful indeed.

As a drill press, this machine's nice fil and finish and solid performance in testing left me with no real gripes. 1 like llie double-hex mil depth stop. The tool could use a task light and lever handle for speed changes, bul those aren't deal breakers.

A third pulley between the Iwo main clusters activates the 3/4" oscillating motion to turn llie press into a sander. Installing a third drive bell makes the changeover easy. The lable has a through hole for sanding drums, and a set of them with sandpaper comes standard. A dust port helps

contain sanding debris. The On/Ofif switch placement was unusual, but I see no particular safety issues with llie side location.

And the Winner is...

Shop Fox. I use a spindle sander as much as a drill press, and maybe more. There are several solid buys in this test, but a tool that provides real dual functionality wins my "Best Bel" accolades.
