Drawing No. 1—Working with grain direction.

Position the pattern go that the grain direction gives the vulnerable

elements their greatest strength. Orientation B is preferable to A.

The ears, tail, and legs A would break easily with grain orientation A.

With this grain orientation, the only weak area is the narrow connection between the tall and the body. The legs and ears would be strong as the grain goes along their length.

Drawing No. 2—

Cutting the eyes.

Right: cutting the plane for the eye. Left: loc. of the eye on the side plane.

Fig. 1. After sawing out the pattern, draw a center line around the carving and the guidelines for the legs, tail, ears, and mane.

Fig, 2. With a coping saw, cut between the ears and the legs.

Fig. 3. Make a stop cut in front of the right and behind the left ear, then remove the excess wood.

Fig. 0. Separate the tail from the body and add details.

Fig. 5. Make stop cuts separating the upper legs from the belly.
