INSTRUCTIONS

A word about wood

The supplies list includes nominal recommendations for wood; allow extra size for proper grain selection. Wood species substitutions can be made for color and availability.

The wood stock is created both for the face (cedar) and eyes (red oak) by cutting the wood wedges, edge gluing, and doing a preliminary surface sanding. Preparing the wood stock in this way eliminates the difficulty in handling the many small loose pieces that would be encountered during construction.

There are 12 identical wedge pieces to mark and cut. To assist with marking, create a face and eye trace-around template from scrap plywood or cardboard

Here comes the sun

Align the template with the grain and trace around it to mark for cutting as shown in Fig. 1. The number of cuts can be minimized by stack cutting several pieces at a time (see Fig. 2). True the cut edges with a hand sanding block or a disk sander fixture. Note: a slight amount of material should also be removed from the center tips for best fit. On a piece of wax paper or plastic, apply a thin bead of glue to the mating parts and pin in place on the Pin 'N Press pin-up board to dry (see Fig. 3). When glue is dry, sand the surface.
