Make the base assemblies and caboose roof

Cut the three bases and caboose roof to the specified dimensions and rout the edges with a 1/4"-Dia. roundover bit. The caboose roof is now complete, so set it aside for further assembly.

On the three bases, locate and mark two points along the 10" centerline, each 3/4" in from either end. These marks locate the holes tor the coupler dowels that connect the cars. Drill a 1/2"-Dia. hole thru at each location. Sand the holes, then glue two wheel blocks to each base. One of these assemblies is now the complete flat car.

Make the engine

Start construction on the engine by making the boiler. On the lathe, simply turn a cylinder whose diameter is approximately 1-7/8". With the belt sander. flatten a 1/4" wide area lengthwise on the edge of the cylinder— this forms a flat surface which becomes the bottom of the boiler. With the boiler's flat side down, bore a hole into the top surface of the boiler that is large enough to receive the smokestack. Glue the smokestack into the hole.

The engine's cab consists of four parts—two sides, a roof, and a firewall. Cut these parts to specified dimensions. Make the decorative semicircular cuts on the engine-cab sides and bore the window hole as indicated on the pattern. Sand the pieces.

To assemble the cab, glue the two sides to the firewall, then attach the roof, aligning it with the front edge. The back edge of the roof should extend beyond the

back edge of the sides. Sand all outer surfaces flush with the belt sander, and round all exposed corners with sandpaper.

With the cab completed, assemble the rest of the engine. Center the boiler on one of the base assemblies and glue it in place. Position the assembled cab directly behind the boiler, and glue it to the base and back end of the boiler.

Pake the caboose

Begin by making a rectangular box 3-1/2" wide x 3" high x 6-1/4" long (see Fig. 2). Center this box on the remaining base assembly and glue it in place. Glue the caboose roof to the top of the box—make sure the edges of the roof are lined up with the edges of the base.

Cut the caboose observation deck to specified dimensions, sand all surfaces, and round the upper edge. Center this piece on top of the roof and secure it with glue.

Make the couplers

Size the stock and bore 7/16"-Dia. x 1/2" deep holes to receive the dowels as indicated on the pattern. Glue the dowels into the holes (see Fig. 3).

Finish

Give the train a coat of waterbase polyurethane, allow to dry, then sand using very fine sandpaper. Paint according to the color photo, allow to dry, and finish with a second coat of waterbase polyurethane. |j
