Step 5, Now make stop cuts along the edge of the center flower, working from the button outward. Use the tool that matches the arc. The arc connecting the long petal to the button uses the No. 7-20mm gouge. The arc con-| necting the short petal to the button uses the No. 7-16mm gouge.

Step 3. Using the same tooi, cut away wood from around the bottom. Using two

hands on the tool will give you stability. The hands work in opposition, the hand on the blade keeps the tool from going too far and accidentally cutting away the button.

Step 4, Going with the grain on both cuts, round the button by using the same tool upside down. The arc of the tool will round the button automatically.

Step &. Finish outlining the center flower with the V tool. Begin shaping the flower by lowering the wood next to the gouge stop cuts. Each petal has one high and one low side adjacent to the button, creating alternating overlapped areas.

Step 7. Make a V cut down the center of each petal. Use the No. 3-14mm gouge upside down to round the petal into the V groove.

Step 9. Using tools that fit the arcs, make stop cuts around the remaining elements, working outward from the center flower. As lyou can see, this pattern is composed of quar-Iters. When you make a stop cut in one quarter, use that tool to repeat the same stop cut in the other three quarters. Do not finish one section and try to copy it in the other sections. Instead, make each cut four times before setting the tool down. You will often find that you can first make a stop cut and then a clearing cut with the same tool.

Step &. After the centerflower has been carved, cut a channel all around the outside edge of it. Make a fairly smooth transition from the uncarved section to the groove around the center flower. Draw on the remainder of the pattern, or redraw the sections that were carved away.
