A word from the designer

Some of the most clever ideas are quite simple. This carving is based on a folk carving and is made directly from a 1-3/4" x 1-3/4" block. Though the body faces forward, the head is turned to one side. This is done quite cleverly by carving the face into a corner of the block. This is an interesting twist to add appeal to your figure carvings. Also, this kind of folk carving is fun to do because it is done with a knife and uses the given dimensions of the block itself to create the figure. The only preliminary sawing needed, if you choose to do any at all, is to cut out the feet.

Because this is a folk-style carving, it is important to make your cuts bold. Don't fuss over the details. Keep the edges of the cuts sharp. Sanding is a definite "no-no" here, the cuts should express the form. Make the stop cuts deep enough to create strong edges to define the apron, the shawl, the scarf, etc. Remember, keep your forms blocky and your cuts bold. No timid cuts on this project!

right corner of the block to indicate the bottom of the chin, and the other 3/4" up from the bottom to indicate the bottom of the skirt. Carve a notch about 3/4" deep into the corner at the chin line. Make a long slanted cut starting from about 1-1/2" up from the bottom edge to the stop cut under the chin.

block, all around the figure. That is the bottom edge of the shawl. Make a stop cut on this line about 1/4" deep. Remove wood below that to

start forming the skirt. Notice, also, that the waste wood has been removed to indicate the feet.

round off the other three corners so that the cuts taper to the top of the head.

4. In the head corner, draw an oval to mark the face. Make a stop cut there and remove wood to begin forming the face.
