Step 13. Mix burnt umber with cadmium red to make a dark tone for the stripes on the apron. Use a liner brush to paint them on. Follow that with titanium white stripes between the darker ones. Mix ivory black and cadmium red for the lines on the shawl, and burnt umber and titanium white for the lines on the head scarf. Mix burnt umber and flesh to paint the eyebrows onto the face and to reinforce the lines under the eyes.

Step. 9. Carve in the details for the hand, fingers, and sleeve. Carve the arm so that it disappears under the shawl.

Step 12. Paint the shoes and skirt ivory black. Use very watery paint so that the grain shows through the color. Mix a little ivory black and burnt umber with titanium white to make an off-white. Po not over-mix the paint. It looks better when there are variations in the color. Fkint the apron off-white. Add a little more titanium white to the mixture to make a lighter shade for the head scarf. Mix a touch of burnt umber into the J Kcadmium red and paint the shawl with this mix-• J:ture. Paint flesh on the face and hands. I like to lay a darker tone down fist and then dry brush a lighter tone of flesh on the high areas. This helps to give dimension to the face and hands.
