Coloring

Backer board and background pieces

Step 1 - Apply a wash of Butter Cream on all rocks on the two halves. Place a wash of Straw Yellow on all ground areas and on the grass lines along the bottom of the trees. Paint the spruce trees (front and edges) with Dark Forest Green. Paint spruce tree No. 12 with Dark Forest Green at this time as well. After the ground area dries, very lightly go over the Straw Yellow with 220 grit sandpaper to knock off any raised wood fibers. Do the same on the rocks. You should be able to see the traced lines through the wash.

Step 2 - Using the Sunburst Yellow, Yellow Ochre, Burnt Ochre, Sienna Brown, True Green, Spring Green, Apple Green and Grass Green colored pencils, fill out the ground terrain and the mountain meadow. Looking at the photograph, you can see that I developed these areas from the right side toward the center area and from the left toward the center area.

Step 3 - Using the Burnt Ochre, Black and Cream colored pencils, lightly shade to add shape and shadow to the rocks. Use more Black to further emphasize the shapes where necessary. The other rocks you cut out (Nos. 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5) can be colored the same way at this time. Step 4 - Using the Canary Yellow, Spring Green and Burnt Ochre colored pencils, add shape and shadow to the spruce trees. Canary Yellow and Spring Green can be used to add highlights on the green limbs. Use the Burnt Ochre on the tree trunks where they show, then add a Black line on the left side of the tree trunk for depth and shadow.

Trees and Logs (Nos. 1-10) Step 1 - The trees and logs are colored basically the same; however, the logs should be kept a little lighter to give the impression that they have received more abuse from the weather while resting on the ground. Use the Cream, Yellow Ochre, Burnt Ochre, Light Umber and Black colored pencils. Refer to the photograph. Step 2 - Use the Apple Green, Spring Green, True Green and Black colored pencils to shade the green foliage on top of tree No. 1. Use Spring Green and True Green for the lighter highlights and Black for shadows and next to the tree trunk for depth.

Bushes (Nos. 1 and 2 and the bush at base of tree No. 1)

All three bushes are colored basically the same. Use the Sunburst Yellow, Orange, Burnt Ochre, True Green, Spring Green, Apple Green, Dark Green and Black colored pencils. Use Dark Green and Black in between the leaves and to show depth. Use Black and Burnt Ochre for the limbs of the bushes and also for tree No. 11.

Red Squirrel

Use the Burnt Ochre and Black colored pencils and White paint. With a small brush, paint the underside of the squirrel, around the eye, and under the nose and chin. Color the rest of body with Burnt Ochre and add Black pencil for shading.

Eagle

Use the same colors as above for the Squirrel. The tail and head feathers are White paint, the rest of the body is Burnt Ochre pencil. Use the Black pencil for detail.
